Rhône style reds are gaining popularity in Washington state, particularly in the Walla Walla Valley. Syrah reached third place for red grape popularity in 2012, while other Rhône red grapes such as Grenache Mourvèdre are coming out of obscurity.
A new virus believed to come from unclean plants is worrying Washington vintners. The virus, called the Grapevine red blotch, displays similar symptoms to the known virus, leaf roll. Anecdotal evidence indicate the virus is spread by the leafhopper.
