Shutdown, Farm Bill, TTB A.I. Notice, Intoxicating Hemp
The U.S.-Israeli invasion of Iran eclipsed everything else on the news cycles and in DC this week, and probably will in the near future. Still, there were some quiet developments worth noting.
The Mini-Shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues as Senate Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked about ICE operations. And yesterday, DHS Secretary (now “former”) was abruptly fired for reasons unrelated to ICE’s behavior. Meanwhile, for travelers, TSA Precheck lines are operating, but Global Entry for international flights remains closed.
The Farm Bill began the ‘mark up’ process, a routine procedure for any legislation, but it is expected to take some time due to the partisan differences on issues like nutritional assistance and pesticide use. FYI, the Farm Bill was supposed to be passed 28 months ago.
Intoxicating Hemp Beverages have become a major issue in DC since, due to legislative glitch, they are neither regulated or taxed while being sold in many outlets across the country. WineAmerica’s Michael Kaiser will be hosting a special listing session on April 1 to discuss the latest developments, and all WineAmerica members are encouraged to join. To become a member, go HERE
The Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has issued some information on A.I. Advertising which wineries need to know in order to stay out of trouble. Michael covered this in his members-only e-newsletter earlier this week.
WineAmerica’s annual DC Fly-In is scheduled for May 5-6, with members encouraged to attend. This is the annual advocacy push when WineAmerica members from around the country meet with their Senators and Representatives to convey our priorities. In past years, there have been about 100 meetings over the two days. Another highlight is an in-person meeting with TTB Administrator Mary Ryan and her top staff in their offices.
