Shutdown Showdown (The Sequel)

After yet another recess, Congress returned to DC on Tuesday to continue fighting about how to prevent a government shutdown in 10 days when the fiscal year ends and the money runs out. This being an election year, the posturing and politics are particularly intense, but as usual, it is expected that they’ll strike a deal at the last minute.

Meanwhile, trying to inject some civility among the warring factions, WineAmerica is hosting a Congressional wine reception next Wednesday in the Longworth House Office Building, and in conjunction with the Congressional Wine Caucus (CWC). Appropriately, wine from all 50 states will be represented at the tasting. This will be the official kickoff of the Come Over October celebration created by noted wine communicators Karen MacNeil, Kimberly Noelle Charles, and Gino Colangeo, who will be in attendance and participate in a press conference ahead of the tasting.

Come Over October (link) will be an international celebration of—and with—wine as the beverage that brings us together—family, friends, colleagues, entire strangers—to toast all that is good about life. At homes, in restaurants, in wineries, and at watch parties, we will be reminded that wine is truly a cultural phenomenon as well as a model of sustainability and an economic engine.
