State Profiles: Maine Wine Country

Known for lobster, a rugged coastline, and massive forests, Maine is also a wine producer, thanks to the cold-hardy Minnesota varieties like LaCrescent, Frontenac, and Marquette

Cellardoor Winery uses its five acres to grow Marquestte and Frontenac Gris, and in 2018 produced its first ice wine. The property is on a hillside with a magnificent vista, with event facilities on the grounds and tasting rooms both on-site and in Portland. Its advice: “Live your life, Be who you are, Drink good wine along the way.”

WillowsAwake Winery is a recent addition to the scene, having opened in 2017 and including a No. 10 Eatery as one of the attractions among the pines, vineyard, and sloping hills.

Great Grapes: Brianna

Developed by Elmer Swenson in 1983, this greenish grape turns to gold when fully ripened, is cold hardy to -28, and ripens in late August or early September. Brianna produces a medium-dry table wine, sometimes a dessert wine, and is also recommended as a table grape.
